In August 2023, 60 rubber flexi-baffles were installed in a 150-metre section of concrete flume in Bon Accord Creek in Surrey, British Columbia restoring salmon access to more than 2.5 km for the first time in 75 years. City of Surrey's Salmon Habitat and Restoration Program (SHaRP) partnered up with Resilient Waters, Watershed Watch Salmon Society, and SSA Environmental, with funding support from the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund.

On May 17, 2024, a fish-friendly floodgate that will restore salmon habitat and improve flood management was opened near Deroche in the Fraser Valley. The new floodgate replaces an old, failing culvert built in the 1950s and restores fish passage between Joe’s Lake and the Nicomen Slough, a major offshoot of the Fraser River. Salmon will now have access to five hectares of wetland that has been inaccessible for more than 70 years. The project was led by Leq’a:mel First Nation, and the North Nicomen Diking District, Resilient Waters and Watershed Watch, and was funded by the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund. A new fish-friendly flood gate has been installed on Agassiz Slough. This is great news for salmon, and other fish, who are no longer blocked from accessing their habitats behind the gate. Increasing salmon habitat is critical to strengthening salmon populations. Students from a local school heard about the project and, inspired to help salmon, they decided to plant salmon-friendly plants along the waterway (with help from LUSH). The Agassiz Slough gate is one of 156 sites with fish passage issues identified in the lower Fraser by Watershed Watch Salmon Society. While it’s great to show proof of concept, that fish-friendly flood control is possible, we want to see projects like this become the norm, and not the exception when it comes to upgrading our aging flood infrastructure to better protect our communities and B.C.’s wild salmon populations. This project was made possible through collaboration between the municipality, landowners, Indigenous experts, the Resilient Waters field crew and community members.
